Carrowniskey is Mayo’s surfing Mecca

Carrowniskey and Cross beaches are adjoining sandy beaches which stretch for miles, south of Louisburgh – and a Mecca for surfers from all over the world.

Carrowniskey beach, located 25km west of Westport, is one of the most popular surfing beaches in Ireland. It has a car park and changing facilities, and, most important of all, a lifeguard on duty during the summer months.

To drive to Carrowinskey follow the R335 from Westport to Louisburgh and look out for the sign to turn off for Carrowniskey about 1km south west of Louisburgh.

The beach is the home of Carrowniskey Horse Races one Sunday every July which has lots of entertainment for all the family.

Both Carrowniskey, and the adjoining beach at Cross are world famous surfing beaches and the best months for surfing are May and June and again in August and September.

The beaches have majestic views of Croagh Patrick, Mweelrea, and the islands of Clew Bay and are perfect for long walks.
